Riley sang the heart-tugging ballad so well that many thought she wrote the song, a testament to her interpretive abilities and Full Force's empathy skills. Sometime after, he came up with the lyrics and lead melody for "Thanks for My Child." Bowlegged Lou asked Riley (who thought she'd blown her big break) to sing lead on the song, and she jumped at the chance. She met Full Force member Bowlegged Lou while they both were performing in a community theater. In other words, to some degree the singer has had to "been there." Cheryl Pepsii Riley was an aspiring singer whose day job was in nursing working with handicapped children. For a performance to really touch the listener, the singer has to be able to relate to the core theme of the lyric. Empathy is a key characteristic of good singers.
